HOMESTUDY WEEK 1 TERM 4
Welcome back to school and I hope that you all had a great holiday!! I really missed you all !
Thanks to Jess and Cheyenne who participated in the conference presentation in Sydney via Skype.
We have a busy and exciting term ahead so I hope that you are all full of energy and feeling passionate about your learning.
I was so impressed with the deep and meaningful learning that you all engaged in on Human Rights . All parents will be invited to an evening get together with snacks and drinks and you can share your work with them in an evening of celebration and conversation. Watch this space for details.
SO LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS
This is our question for this term
Will our culture survive without the Arts?
So the first thing that we are going to look at, think about, share stories and conversations and ask questions about is:
What is culture and what is special about our culture?
HOMESTUDY TASK ONE
Creating a Photo Album
You are about to embark on an OE.
As you travel you want to take some pictures with you to share with other travellers along the way.
Find pictures of these:
A small flightless bird.
A native plant - our top Netball team uses this symbol.
The men's rugby team.
A small fuzzy fruit that is named after the small flightless bird, (although it came from China!).
A buzzy children's toy.
What is it? ( Unit studies book )
The people of
, a town in the rural heartland of New Zealand, have identified examples of Kiwiana.
How many of them do you recognise?
What would you suggest they add to their Kiwiana exhibition? Why? ( Unit studies book )
Add another FIVE symbols to your Kiwi picture albumn before you embark on your OE.
Label all of your pictures and give them a caption saying how they represent NZ and its culture.
( Make sure you pack the Marmite before you leave- or should that be Vegemite?)
BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR PRESENTATION
HOMESTUDY TASK TWO
( Unit Studies book )
Kiwi Identity: Speak New Zild
can be a bit confusing it's true.
Choose ten (clean) slang words that you often hear used in New Zealand speech and create a Word Puzzle using Puzzlemaker or a grid created in Excel.
Young New Zilders speak an even stranger language than older people.
Choose five words that you use in every day speech that may puzzle your teachers and prepare a Glossary for them.
How important is langauge in establishing our identity?
Draw a speech bubble for you as a Kiwi about to embark on your OE and write a typical Kiwi greeting so that you will have something to say when you meet new friends
